Role, Scope, and Impact
· GDC relies on the News Team to learn about the latest updates on the world. The News Team directly influences our work priorities and the activities that we develop. You may see the team as a group of passionate journalists or outreach volunteers cracking down on misinformation. However you may see the role of this important team, GDC relies on it to engage with the global diaspora while our volunteers also get updated. News Team also learns and promotes the good practices of our member diaspora organizations so that we can facilitate any knowledge transfer in an effective and trusted way such as through our website. As our News Team, you will be leading an investigative and creatively minded team that will not sit still. You will be virtually reaching out with your team to identify the issues faced by the global diaspora and address them for solutions.
Job Purpose
· Responsible for leading the News team to ensure effective knowledge transfer on GDC’s priorities and activities through the website and other social media platforms.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
● Taking overall responsibility for the News Team and training team members
● Researching, writing, editing, proofreading, and filing news stories, features, and articles
● Managing all types of journalist work including investigative, news, reviews, columns, and feature-writing
● Interviewing diasporas in a range of different circumstances
● Developing contacts to maintain a flow of news in specific areas
● Attending press conferences and asking questions
● Attending a variety of other events, from ceremonies or premieres to cultural celebrations and industry briefings
● Replying to submissions and reacting to breaking news stories
● Writing and researching accurate stories
● Developing and uploading content onto your magazine/newspaper’s website
● Building and maintaining a good relationship with media outlets
· Preparing documentaries on specific topics with the Video team
