Roberta Romano believes that migration can positively impact all communities involved, that we all share the responsibility for one another and that every human being is born with intrinsic dignity and rights and there is no rest until these rights are respected and this dignity is fulfilled. She has been working, over the last 14 years, to contribute to the advancement of migrants’ dignity, wellbeing and protection. She is an expert in international migration policies and programs, protection of civilians in crisis, with a focus on displaced populations, and peace building and she has gained progressive humanitarian/development experience in conflict, post-conflict, transitional contexts. She currently works with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the Washington DC office, where she focuses on formulation of global policies and frameworks for migrants in crises, while also supporting field programs, building partnerships and engaging Diasporas for humanitarian and development purposes. Previously, she was Program Manager in Northern Uganda with the Italian NGO, Good Samaritan, working with former child soldiers and victims of conflict. She also worked as Protection Coordinator in Darfur, Sudan, with IOM, running a complex protection program aimed at ensuring IDPs’ freedom of movement and voluntary and safe return and informing humanitarian policies/response by ensuring the mainstreaming of protection priorities. She holds a Master in Human Rights and Conflict Management from Sant’ Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa, Italy, and a Professional Certificate in International Migration Studies from Georgetown University. She is Italian, but she feels like a global citizen.
