Nigerian diaspora members currently living in the United Kingdom are highly skilled and knowledgeable, and thus can contribute to national development. They can make contributions in the form of investment, skills transfer, mentoring and consulting.
This mapping exercise was conducted to provide information on the Nigerian diaspora working in the health and education sectors in the United Kingdom as well as to identify those who are willing to invest or contribute their skills towards the development of Nigeria.
This report has five chapters. It defines the methodology used in gathering the information, identifies the profiles of Nigerian professionals in the health and education sectors, and highlights their continuing connection with Nigeria. The data collected is analysed and the results of the mapping exercise are organized to provide information on the profiles of respondents, their life in the United Kingdom, and the factors impacting relocation and their decision to return. The report also highlights the modalities for diaspora engagement and identifies existing diaspora programmes that can be leveraged by the stakeholders. The conclusions and recommendations are very specific to each target group such as federal government, State government and diaspora associations, highlighting the interventions that each group needs to address to persuade the diaspora to return home so they can contribute to national development even in the short term.
