Funded by USAID, the DEMAC initiative – Diaspora Emergency Action & Coordination is hosted by the Danish Refugee Council at its headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. DEMAC is a global initiative who works for a deeper understanding of diasporas as humanitarian actors and strive for better coordination between diaspora organizations and the humanitarian system.
DEMAC’s mission is to improve coordination and collaboration among diaspora organizations providing humanitarian assistance and across diaspora organizations and institutional humanitarian actors. The initiative further aims to increase visibility and engagement for diaspora organizations in the humanitarian system.
DEMAC is currently working on several emergency-prone focus countries, such as Afghanistan, Ukraine, Somalia, Pakistan, Timor-Leste, Tunisia and more, while at the same time remaining prepared to engage with and support diaspora from additional countries should a humanitarian crisis unfold in their country of origin. DEMAC is developing an operational framework for diaspora and humanitarian actors to improve future responses to humanitarian emergencies, including guidelines, tools, and resources.
