From December 11th to 17th the Global Diaspora Confederation held the second successful Global Diaspora Week, (GD Week), built on the precedent of the first GD Week in 2021. The goal was to bring together diaspora organizations (DO) to discuss the seven flagship activities that the Global Diaspora Confederation has developed to meet the needs of DOs and help with challenges faced by diaspora organizations on all continents of the world.
The flagship activities are Academy, Awards, Coordination, Expo, Fair, Festival, and Forum. All of them were shaped according to what diaspora organizations aim to see and engage with each other. GDC flagship activities were built in accordance with Objective 19 of the Global Compact for Migration focusing exclusively on enhancing, empowering, and developing diasporas globally.
Asia, Africa, Europe, North, Central, and South America, the Caribbean, and Oceania had the opportunity to bring their insights and suggestions on what the Global Diaspora Confederation should offer and implement in each one of the flagship activities. On each day of the Global Diaspora Week, diaspora organizations from a specific continent were invited to participate in the discussions and bring their point of view on what the Global Diaspora Confederation needs to focus on in order to reach its goals.
On the last day of the Global Diaspora Week, the 2nd Global Diaspora Assembly was held. It counted with the participation of renowned panellists from all continents presenting the main key outcomes for each continental day of the Global Diaspora Week.
As a special guest, Ugochi Daniels, Deputy Director General of IOM – UN, inspired all the participants with her purposeful words and support toward diaspora communities.
Bringing diasporas together as a strong global community and helping them to develop themselves and their direct impact on their communities are some of the main objectives of the Global Diaspora Confederation.
As stated by Global Diaspora Confederation’s Chair, Mr. Peter Kwok, “GDC is built by and for [diaspora organizations]. […] The impact we wished to achieve through those platform activities responded so well to what DOs were asking for, such as: membership, coordination, capacity building and fundraising”.
For that purpose, the Global Diaspora Confederation officially launched its GDC Membership and the Global Diaspora Humanitarian Hub during the 2nd Global Diaspora Assembly.
The Global Diaspora Confederation is a unique opportunity for diaspora organizations all over the world to be part of a global organization that is actively listening to their needs and bringing all efforts together to make sure diaspora communities prosper.
As stated by Dr. Martin Russell, founder of the Global Diaspora Insights, “opportunities come to pass and not to pause”. Therefore, this is the opportunity diaspora organizations were so long looking for and the Global Diaspora Confederation commits itself to work with and for diaspora organizations in order to achieve all its objectives.
