How do diasporas express their sense of belonging in multiple societies? | They try to create a “home away from home”. Even though they have left their country in search of “the American dream”, they long for home and try to bring bits of it with them. I witnessed this while photographing the Ethiopian community in the United States, specifically those residing in the DMV. There is a sense of nostalgia and wanting to keep a part of who they are while integrating into U.S. society as immigrants. This is an ongoing project that documents the lives of Ethiopian immigrants residing in the Washington D.C. area, where Ethiopians started migrating to in large numbers in the 1970s. It explores how they connect to their homeland Ethiopia while integrating their Ethiopian identity into their American lifestyle. |

It was the great Nobel-laureate Rabindranath Tagore who, under the overwhelming influence of the colorful ‘Holi Festival’ & the beautiful spring season on his poetic mind, introduced this lovely occasion as an annual event in his Bishwabharati University in Shantiniketan. Every year, the nation & international students of the institution, attired in colorful dresses like yellow, celebrate ‘Vasanta Utsav’ in a very special way. Numbers of cultural programs, group choreography, songs & dance performances, are staged. Programs are followed by frolic, as all the students of the university & foreign visitors smear each other with colored powders & express festive wishes. Since its inception, ‘Vasanta Utsav’ has become a milestone of Bengali culture & has also captured international interest. The aim is to ensure that Africans wherever they are located can reconnect with their roots and have a true sense of identity as Africans. This is a laudable achievement on the part of and the entire Africans in the Diaspora. While programmes and activities aimed at bridging this gap are being fashioned one of the major issues that must not be ignored is the inclusion of youth in these activities Educational Activities and Youth Empowerment initiatives in Nigeria. |

How do diasporas express their sense of belonging in multiple societies?

How do diasporas express their sense of belonging in multiple societies?, Diasporas as influencers: how does the diaspora contribute positively to their societies through the use of technology?, Diasporas helping their communities: what is it like to assist communities during a crisis? | It has often been said that in war there are no winners, only losers. This statement is very true in many ways, for over the past one hundred years war has claimed millions of lives. The First World War, the Second World War, and the Korean War have each taken the lives of many Canadians. As a result of these massive conflicts, Canada would be forever changed, and would never forget it’s fallen. Young Canadians fought and died for the freedom of generations to come, for the oppressed, for democracy, and for their friends. These wars were fought to end all wars, but sadly, history can repeat itself. They strove for victory at all costs, giv- ing their lives and showing the true strength of Canada. Their contributions and deeds must be remembered to guard against such horrific events. |

Far from our homeland we are sewing traditional blouses(called IA), I care everywhere my granny's handmade carpet, that she offered for my marriage, these and some many other things makes us feel a little bit like home. We sing "Moldovan Rose" and dance "Hora" (traditional Moldovan dance), even if we have crossed boarders, roads and rivers and encountered new people, traditions we talk and promote our country proudly, because it is a small country, but with a BIG heart, we are constantly cherishing the place were we came from, Moldova. |

How do diasporas express their sense of belonging in multiple societies? | Bom Retiro is a neighbourhood in central São Paulo, Brazil, known as an ethnic enclave. he history of Bom Retiro is intertwined with migratory movements and the establishment of Estação da Luz in 1867, where a large influx of people began to disembark in search of opportunity. Since its beginning, the neighbourhood has attracted diverse ethnic groups, including Italians, Portuguese, Spaniards, Jews, Greeks, Arabs, Cypriots, Armenians, Koreans, Bolivians, Paraguayans, Peruvians, and migrants from other areas of Brazil and the world. It is marked by untold uncomfortableness of communities coexisting but not recognising each other. The photos seek an intersection between the different daily spaces Jews, Koreans, Bolivians, and other ethnicities inhabit in the neighbourhood, with the audacity of imagining new possibilities of human interaction and narratives between them and where each one calls home. |
