Biografía

Olivia Karp holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Toronto Metropolitan University (formally known as Ryerson). She did her masters from Laurier University in International Public Policy where she specialized in human security and environmental policy. Olivia has six years of experience in the migrant and refugee field holding positions like Settlement and Youth Intern at FCJ Refugee Center, Youth Program Support at CultureLink Settlement and Community Services, Mentor at WoodGreen Community Services to a newcomer to Canada, and Rise Mentor at Apathy is Boring. Throughout her work in this sector she had advocated for the importance of refugee and migrant inclusion. Which has helped to expand her horizon on the topic of climate migration. She was the Climate Mobility contact point for the Migrant Youth and Children Platform (MYCP) for their climate mobility team through the UN Major Group for Children and Youth network. Olivia was also a Contact Point for the YOUNGO (Official UNFCCC Youth Constituency) Youth Migrant and Climate Change working group. In both of these roles she has organized various events, workshops, networking sessions, and social media campaigns. She has presented different academic papers focusing on climate mobility. She was a Graduate Research Fellow for Global Affairs Canada working on a research project climate change will have on migration in the Great Lakes region between Canada and the United States. On top of that she presented at an academic conference called the International Humanitarian Studies Association conference through the North South University in Bangladesh. She presented on the intersectionality between climate change and the human trafficking nexus while addressing what role do humanitarian and civil society actors play in this nexus. She has gotten to talk at forums like the Global Forum for Migration and Development (GFMD) where she has spoken about the importance of youth involvement in climate mobility. She has hosted events though YOUNGO and MYCP focusing highlighting the voices of those affected around climate mobility. She is a firm advocate for getting those who have experienced different complex issues to the table and working with them to find innovative solutions. Olivia is now focusing on the intersectionality between climate change, migration and human trafficking. While working on building her blog and organization called the Climate Mobility Community Action Network (CMCAN).
