Ethiopia in the USA
Navigating identities: is there a relationship between Diaspora’s homeland and new land? How do diasporas express their sense of belonging in multiple societies?
They try to create a “home away from home”. Even though they have left their country in search of “the American dream”, they long for home and try to bring bits of it with them. I witnessed this while photographing the Ethiopian community in the United States, specifically those residing in the DMV. There is a sense of nostalgia and wanting to keep a part of who they are while integrating into U.S. society as immigrants. This is an ongoing project that documents the lives of Ethiopian immigrants residing in the Washington D.C. area, where Ethiopians started migrating to in large numbers in the 1970s. It explores how they connect to their homeland Ethiopia while integrating their Ethiopian identity into their American lifestyle.
